The campaign for lighter evenings has been delayed. MP’s who have been backing the idea of putting the clocks forward to GMT plus one hour in the winter, and plus two hours in the summer (known as double summer time) have said that this idea is currently on hold until after the Scottish Independence referendum in 2014.
This campaign aims to boost tourism in the South West, and this time shift would mean there would be lighter winter evenings and even longer evenings in the summer. It’s estimated that longer daylight hours would increase tourism revenue by up to £4 billion in the UK, creating thousands of jobs! Campaigners claim that having lighter winter evenings would also cut road deaths and cut energy use.
Although all of these points are fair enough reasons to consider changes, the critics say the change would produce long, dark mornings and have an impact on safety and quality of life, particularly for dairy farmers. I think it’s definitely worth trialing, just to see if it really does improve the tourism as is predicted.
I would love to hear from you what you think about this matter, are you for or against?
