Stroud is a small market town that is located below the western escarpment of the Cotswold Hills and is noted for its steep streets and stunning countryside. The Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty surrounds the town, and the Cotswold Way follows through to the west. The town lies 10 miles away from the city of Gloucester and 14 miles from Cheltenham.

Stroud is known for its involvement in the industrial revolution as it was a cloth town. The woollen mills were powered by the small rivers and the wool supplied from Cotswold Sheep.

The town now is a wonderful place to visit and there are a number of delightful restaurants along with several hotels, inns and B&B’s in this market town as well as accommodation in the surrounding area.

Nestled within the village of Painswick is the Art Couture Gallery. This stunning art gallery offers a wide range of creative exhibits to view created by both local and non-local artists. A viewer of the wonderful art has said “it’s like a London art gallery within the Cotswolds”. Another visitor has said that it is “unexpected in a small village”.

Another activity that would be fun for the family is taking a trip to the Painswick Beacon. From the Beacon, you will be able to see the City of Gloucester, Cheltenham Town, plus the scenic views of Cotswold and Malvern hills. With glorious views for miles and miles, this would be an activity to interest all the family. There is access to the beacon via car and by foot. Cotswold Way Walkers Raise £8000 for charity

We were really pleased to hear that one of our Carryabag customers was walking the Cotswold Way to raise money for two charities close to their hearts, The Medecins sans Frontieres and Alzheimer's Society.

Following on from their successful walk, they provided us with an update and they raised a staggering £8000 for their chosen charities!

#CotswoldHotspot: Painswick

The next village on our list of #CotswoldHotspots is Painswick. With its fine buildings built from local Cotswold Stone, Painswick is often referred to as the Queen of the Cotswolds. The buildings are a reflection of the town's former prosperity during 300 years of activity in the cloth and wool industry.

St. Mary's church is largely of the 15th and 16th centuries but the spire was not added until 1632. The churchyard is famed for its 99 yew trees which were planted around 1792 - Local folklore says that every time a hundredth tree is planted, it sadly dies.

There are numerous small streets to explore and quaint shops to discover in the village of Painswick and set on the outskirts of the village are the Rococco Gardens. The gardens are the last sole survivor from the brief early 18th century period of English Rococco Garden design.  The garden combines formality with informality in a flamboyant style making use of charming garden structures strategically place for effect.  There are several hotels, inns and B&Bs in the town with some restaurants and pubs as well as more accommodation in the local area.

Birdlip is a quaint village within the rolling hills of the Cotswolds and has a variety of small village shops to browse. If you are looking for a more intense shopping experience, the bustling city of Gloucester is around a 20 minutes away.

The city offers 2 shopping centres, a variety of restaurants and pubs and plenty to explore within the city streets. If you fancy a smaller venture, why not try to catch a performance at Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham Spa.

Within the small village of Birdlip lies the Royal George Hotel. The hotel offers a warm welcoming bedroom with picturesque views from the hotel windows. Another tourist hotspot for Bourton the water is the Cotswolds Motor Museum. The museum includes motorbikes, cars, caravans and other motoring memorabilia from the 20^th century and home to the famous little car “Brum”. If you are ever on a day out in Bourton on the Water, this is a place you do not want to miss.
