The town of Stonehouse is situated approximately three miles west of Stroud. Stonehouse was mentioned in the Domesday Book written in 1086. The name evolved from Stanhus to Stonehouse (stān> stone + hūs> house), as an effect of the great vowel shift at the end of the Middle Ages.
The Stroud Water Canal runs through the town and one of the original mills remains in operation. There are a couple of pubs in Stonehouse along with a hotel and several B&B’s in the surrounding area.
