We recently wrote a blog post called ‘Business is getting personal’ but thought it was time we also took a better look at the counterargument because, whilst more companies are attempting to utilise social media, many others are blocking the use of sites such as Facebook in the work place.
Recent surveys have found that 63% of people see the use of social media at work as a security threat. It is reported that social media provides corporate spies with an increased ability to view and steal sensitive data. High profile cases such as the attack on Sony this year have caused a growing fear amongst business owners. Others are worried that Facebook distracts employees from the work they are paid for and are blocking this and other social media sites to take away the temptations of browsing on the internet during work hours.
Social media is being blocked by many companies but do most employers see it as a way of protecting private information or merely a way to stop their staff from time wasting during working hours? What do you think? Does the potential of social media as a marketing tool outweigh the threat of it as a distraction and a security risk? Let us know what you think by answering our Facebook poll.
