On the first morning of my work experience week I was unbelievably nervous! I worried about everything that could possibly go wrong, and imagined a million different ways in which I could completely ruin everything; however, my nerves all disappeared as soon as I stepped through the door. Everyone was really friendly, kind and supportive- and this helped me to settle in straight away. I was kept busy every day with plenty of interesting work, such as creating signs and volunteer badges for Sir Thomas Rich’s School Summer Fest, which not only let me be creative but also practise being organised.
I was also surprised to see that not all the work is done in the office, particularly for PR. On the Tuesday I went to the SOHO Coffee Co. store in the Regent Arcade, Cheltenham, to promote the free Abercrombie and Kent cricket coaching session at the Cheltenham Cricket festival. This involved handing out flyers and leaflets, which was a new experience for me, and I feel that as a result of this I have become more confident in my communicative skills. The next day was also a busy one, as I helped out at the re-launch of a Mark Elliot furniture store in Cheltenham- I found this really enjoyable as it gave me a lot of responsibility and being part of the team was a great experience.
As well as working in PR, I also did a lot of work in marketing and research. For example, I created changed some of the hyperlinks on the APT website. At first I found it quite challenging to remember all the steps required to format the page correctly, but I soon got the hand of it and finished the job without too many issues! I also loved the fact that what I was doing would be useful, and that I was making a good contribution.
This week’s work experience has been a really enjoyable one, and I will miss my time here greatly. I feel that what made it so special was that the team were always really welcoming and friendly, and I had a lot of fun working with them. I think that PR and Marketing is definitely a career that I will consider in the future, because I really enjoyed my work experience... and wish I didn’t have to go so soon!
