Yesterday, Starbucks released a new post on the 'future of starbucks' section on their website. The post included information about a new logo, designed to revamp the brand after 40 years trading. The new logo features the traditional white cup, with the green 'siren', however the words 'Starbucks Coffee' have been removed.
Designed to 'represent what Starbucks represents to [its] partners and customers', the new logo has caused outcry, with customers turning to the website to vent their opinions. One example is MimiKatz, who said 'Who's the bonehead in your marketing department that removed the world-famous name of Starbucks Coffee from your new logo? This gold card user isn't impressed!'. It's not all bad however, with one customer saying 'Wow... What a beautiful and compelling way to move the company into the new millennium', and another making a minor amend suggestion to the design (Edward Cannata).
Whatever the opinion, we have to be honest here and say we'll believe it when we see it and these cups are actually in the shops! In the meantime, we're inclined to believe this may be yet another industry PR stunt to get people talking (GAP is another example earlier this year). Still, if you have a brand that's strong enough and well-known enough to do it, it's a great way to get people talking!
This is a bad move. How much time money and hard work went into establishing that logo as a worldwide brand? Why would you throw that away?I think that they need to include their name too.
